Massive Bee Attacks in Israel: How to Interpret This Event?

On April 15th, 2026, an invasion of bees occurred in a mall at Netivot, in southern Israel near Gaza. People panicked upon seeing thousands of bees flying after them. A lot of footage went viral on social media, fueling the idea that Israel is facing a divine sentence.

Indeed, after a recent invasion of thousands of crows over Tel Aviv, which turned out to be simple seasonal migration, some people are starting to apply biblical interpretations to these natural events.

Most of the time, such massive movements seem due to climate shifts, high temperatures, or the loss of habitat for bees, forcing them to migrate into cities. Looking at colony behavior, it follows an escalating effect: a “sentinel” bee stings first, releasing pheromones that boost serotonin and dopamine in the others, turning a peaceful colony aggressive. Each sting releases more pheromones, drawing in thousands of bees within minutes which is a phenomenon already seen in Aurillac, France, in 2025. Environmental stress can also heighten bee reactivity, making them ready to sacrifice their stinger to protect the queen. Fortunately, here no massive attacks were detected; only a few people were stung due to the mall intrusion.

Why Social Media Sees a Biblical Sentence

What makes people think this is a biblical judgment on Israel? The tense geopolitical context, with ongoing war and reported actions by Israel. Such events evoke the “Plagues of Egypt,” with insect invasions as divine punishment. In rabbinical tradition, bees symbolize abundance, order, and righteous speech, but they can also represent the threat of a swarm when out of control. In the Bible, Psalm 118:12 states: “They surrounded me like bees; they blazed like a fire of thorns; then they were extinguished”. This situation clearly echoes that threat, embodying nations as bees.

Misinterpretations and Broader Context

To capture the main points, people have misinterpreted recent events in Israel. For instance, the crows’ migration over Tel Aviv is but the Netivot event remains exceptional, albeit with exaggerated claims. We might ask why Israel is portrayed as a nation cursed by God on social media, while traditional Western media do not convey the same narrative.

From misinterpretations to outright lies, the truth lies beyond.
